For Black History Month, The Westchester Region NAACP ACT-SO Coalition recognizes, Dr. Olivia Juliette Hooker.
Dr. Hooker was not only the last known survivor of the Tulsa, Oklahoma Race Riots in 1921, she was also the first African American woman enlisted in the United States Coast Guard.
In 2015, she was honored at the 134th Commencement of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy by President Barack Obama for her service. Also in 2015, the Westchester Region NAACP ACT-SO Coalition honored Dr. Hooker for 25 years of committed service, as a judge and mentor for students of African descent who competed in our annual regional competitions.
We continue to recognize her for her distinguished service to the community and to our country. We are honored to have known Dr. Hooker and to have shared “precious moments” with her. Dr. Hooker received her “heavenly wings” at the age of 103 in 2018 and is no longer with us but her sprit and legacy will always remain apart of the Westchester Region NAACP ACT-SO Coalition and its mission.
